AZ News January 2007
We arrived in Quartzsite Arizona on December 30, 2006 after departing Lakewood on December 26. We spent two nights in Canyonville Oregon due to snow on the mountain passes but we were very comfortable at the Seven Feathers RV Resort (and Casino). We had access to WiFi and computers, indoor swimming pool, hot tub and buffet (which was only OK nothing great).
As of Wednesday January 3rd - We now have Direct TV; they installed it today. The reception is great and we have it set up with two receivers, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. Now we are learning how to use the remotes and checking the channels after Bill The Cable Guy installed the Dish.
We've made only one trip out in the desert with three jeeps and go prospecting or at least driving in the hills southeast of the Long Term Visitors Area (LTVA) South of Quartzsite. There were the Greeley's and Good's, Ward's and Singleton's, Hartshorn's and Closson's. We spend almost 5 hours out driving around in the back country finding rocks and lots so quartz to take home. One of the interesting finds was a huge Saguaro cactus with what appeared to be an eagle's nest in it. We returned home at 1530 from our day's adventure, unloaded our treasures (rocks) and then settled in to chatting about the day's experience.
It's been really and I mean really windy. On Friday night our friends the Singleton's who have a big motor-home put the "slide out" back in since the wind was bouncing the around. The winds gusts were probably up around 55 MPH and it was cold.
We drove up to Lake Havasu, did laundry, washed the Big Horn, and had lunch with friends from Boise, ID - Bob and Georgia Williams. The William's and we went to visit Mel and Marge Reimers from Boise, ID – we hadn't seen them in 35 plus years. We had a good visit but a short one since they were heading out with some friends. Mel and Marge were neighbors when we lived in Boise back in 1966 – their daughter Shannon babysat the girls (Carrie, Stacy and Cheryl). She's an Importer now and was off in Thailand. Jeff their son is a Physician Assistant (PA) in Idaho. We had a nice but short visit since the Reimer's were heading out to an afternoon party and dance at the Eagles.
On the way home we stopped at the Blue Water Casino near Parker AZ. We had dinner, nothing great there, played the slots for a short time and then were on are way again. Just before getting home we saw a Kit Fox running across the highway.
We are having a Dutch Oven Dinner, hosted by Vern Singleton, a friend from Cedars UT. We are going to get some pork chops to throw in the pot along with the chicken and pick up some BBQ Briquettes. Chicken and potatoes dinner was outstanding.
We took the Komfort into to The RV Pit Stop to dump black and gray water, take on fresh water and propane – then back home to set back up and of course hook up the TV. This year the price is up to $10 to dump and take on water. They also sell propane at $1.93 a gallon. It's an all in one stop and shop.
We have been using the library to get Internet access for the laptops – mom is carrying hers too this year. That way we can spend as much time as we need on line. With the library's computer you are limit to a half hour at a time. This little library has a lot of books, tapes, CD's, and DVD's its surprising how much. Most of the workers at volunteers so overhead for the staff is minimal. The Library will be closed until Tuesday so we want to get an email out.
We went to Blythe, California (25 miles) do some grocery shopping and pick up some stuff so I could build a little shelf for the Direct TV Receiver and mount it above the TV – just like the pioneers I had to do a makeshift job but it works. Now Evie wants another shelf under the little computer desk we brought along so we can put the computers out of the way. Back to Herb's Hardware today looking for a piece of plywood 24 X 13 inches and will probably need some stain too, so goes the projects at my Desert Workshop.
Blythe is the nearest "city" of any size... actually the only real city within 25 miles.
January 23, 2007 - @ Luke AFB AZ this morning – we're going to see my sister Bernie and niece Betty this afternoon and have dinner. It snowed in Phoenix yesterday, the first time in like 20 years. This morning is nice – our biggest problem is the TV remote in our room wasn't working.- its been fixed now.
